Kapermolenpark has been undergoing a significant redevelopment for several years, transforming into a contemporary city park with space for nature, recreation, and education. We guide this process from the master plan through to implementation in multiple phases. By giving the Demer River a central role in the design, the park connects water, landscape, and urban functions. The result is an urban park with high ecological value.

The redevelopment of Kapermolenpark began with a comprehensive vision for the entire site. The existing park was opened up to the Demer, which previously ran only along the edge of the park. By literally drawing the river into the park, a water-rich landscape emerged, with new banks, open grass areas, and various experiential spots along the water.

Along this new water axis, a distinct experiential route was created to structure the park. At the interface between water and paths, a retaining wall was integrated with a swallow wall and a bat cellar, providing urban fauna a place within the park.

An adventurous play area was designed, clearly divided into zones for different age groups.

Scattered throughout the park are viewpoints, seating areas, and soft connections with views of the Demer Valley and the center of Hasselt. A grass amphitheater provides space for smaller events. In 2024, the campus park was added, forming a green connection with the surrounding school campuses of GO!, PXL, and the Provincial Schools.

At the interface between the waterscape and one of the viewpoints, a retaining wall includes a swallow/kingfisher wall and a bat cellar to enhance the experience of fauna in the urban landscape. The cycle path, part of the cycling highway, has been reconstructed.

Currently, BuroLandschap is working on the next phase of park development, which involves expanding the park and creating a sports axis with various sports fields. In the second phase, the entire park will be completed with experiential elements, resulting in a future-oriented urban park.

The vibrant heart of this campus section is currently being realized alongside the redevelopment of the 11th Liniestraat. We are also overseeing subsequent phases, which will include the redevelopment of the skate park, event zones, and Elfde-Lindestraat. Additional subprojects are being prepared in the direction of the Grenslandhallen.

The ultimate goal is a park that connects the entire area and provides space for recreation, nature experiences, exercise, and social interaction for people of all ages, at any time of day.
